Saturday was Motorcycle Day...The Story!
Yamaha’s Nathan Kanney storms to victory at round 5 of the Atlantic Grand Prix Series at Thunder Ridge Motocross Park in New Berlin, NY.
An early morning shower dropped just enough precipitation to make race day conditions perfect for roosting while keeping the dust down on the 6+ mile course. Trail Boss and promoter Dale Freitas laid out a course that consisted of 4 different sections. The start was in the grass track area that lead the riders through the new natural terrain motocross track and and down on to Thunder Ridges famed motocross track from there it was back up on to the grass track and then up the hill into the woods section, that lasted for a little over 3 miles. At the end of the woods section the riders were treated to more grass track and then it was through the scoring barrels and out for another lap.
In the main event it was Suzuki mounted Glenn J. Scherer out of Washington, NJ grabbing the hole shot, following closely behind was Yamaha pilot Thomas Roe out of Chester, NY and in third was AGP points leader and also on a Yamaha Justin Tucker out of Medway, MA. National GNCC and OMA rider Nathan Kanney started mid pack, but quickly carved his way through the pack and moved into the number one position which he controlled to the finish.
Those that participated in the PeeWee race and were treated to a 1.5 mile cross country course that consisted of a new natural terrain motocross track and ribboned grass track. Peewee race winner Ethan Jaudas nabbed the hole shot and controlled that position for the entire 45 minute race, holding down second overall and only seconds behind, riding a Suzuki was Justin Wilk out of Pittston, PA. In third overall was none other than Honda mounted Steven Letts out of West Creek, NJ .
In the youth minicycle race the course was lengthened and now included everything that the adults were riding except the woods section. Grabbing the hole shot was young Ethan Jaudas out of Warminster, PA. and in second it was Brandon Opuszynski riding a Kawasaki out of Wallingford, CT. holding down the third position was Jordan Tucker out of Medway, MA. With 2 laps to go, Jaudas dropped the bike in an off camber turn and had problems restarting. The second and third place riders quickly passed him and at the finish it was Opuszynski, Tucker and Jaudas.
For all those that made the trek deep into the heart of the Unadilla Valley none were disappointed with what awaited them. Most were surprised that the event was only a few hour drive from New York, Philadelphia and Boston metropolitan areas. Comments throughout the pits were extremely favorable about the quality of racing that the Atlantic Grand Prix Series was offering and that it was attracting a lot of attention from fast national caliber riders.
With 9 more races in the 2006 Atlantic Grand Prix series, things are really shaping up for a great second half of season. The next race is Round 6 on July 8 and 9 at that event will be at the Logan Farm in Virgil New York.

Chris Borich dominates AM and PM races at Round 5 of the AGP Series at Thunder Ridge Motocross Park in New Berlin, NY!
New Berlin, NY (06/18/06) – Thunder Ridge of New Berlin, NY was the site for Round 5 of the Atlantic Grand Prix Series. The weather was just as the weatherman predicted, 90 degrees and sunny. Riders spent their idle time before their races keeping hydrated under tents and overhangs trying to escape the blazing sun. Dale and the AGP Crew designed an excellent course consisting of wide trails and natural terrain motocross sections. Water build-up created some muddy sections that were outfitted with bypasses which opened up more passing opportunities that added a great deal of excitement to the race. GNCC riders Rob Hertz and Sean Neidlinger were in attendance for round 5 to Give GNCC Pro and AGP Pro class point leader Chris Borich a run for his money. Stefanie Verkade also returned to defend her AGP Women’s points lead.
Atlantic Grand Prix Series Promoter Dale Freitas strived to put together an excellent race for the youth riders. Austin Findley out of New Providence, PA rode extremely well and took overall in the youth race. Jeremy Wayland finished second place and Dylan Kralle finished in a very close third place.
The Morning Race had a surprise entry with Chris Borich breaking out his Honda Rincon to compete in the Utility Modified class for some extra seat time before the next WPSA Quadterrain Challenge race in Illinois, and Borich wasted no time working his way to the front of the pack and claiming the overall win on his utility ATV. Christopher Peipher, James Wilson, and Stephanie Verkade finished only seconds behind Borich putting them in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place overall respectively.
Chris Borich was back in action for the Afternoon Race, but he wasn’t off to a great start as he had trouble starting his Honda 450R. This gave Rob Hertz, Sean Neidlinger along with the rest of the pro class a chance to put some time on the hard charging Borich, but it wasn’t enough because by the end of lap one, Borich had already taken over the lead.
With the sun still scorching the racers, several of them dropped out of the race early, but not Borich as he charged his way to yet another Atlantic Grand Prix victory with Rob Hertz finishing in second closely followed by Sean Neidlinger in third. Pro Am rider, Blake Kramer put in an impressive ride taking the Pro Am win and the finishing 5th overall.
The next race is Round 6 at the Logan Farm on July 8th and 9th. The Logan Farm is a Thoroughbred Horse Rehabilitation Farm, that’s located just south of Cortland, New York. Proceeds from the gate fee go to saving these horses from becoming DOG FOOD!This course is one the best cross country locations of the AGP Series. 8 miles in length, the course is a combination of Hay fields with winding woods roads and woods trails.
